Minced Pork Noodles - Beijing style

Long time no blog.  I have been doing nothing except burrowing myself at the uni computer lab.  Not very productive though~I don't even know why I'm there since I'm not even doing anything.

My diet currently consists of cheap takeaways and junior snack packs which I stole from my brother's lunchbox.

Hopefully this appauling eating habit will stop after the 6th Nov when I hand in my final assignment and then I can enjoy the nice Cocktail Cruise and munching on canapes on the 8th Nov.

It has been a while since I ate a Minced pork noodle (炸酱面).  It is a traditional Beijing eat consisting of fat round wheat noodles, minced pork in fermented yellow soybean paste (黄酱) and thinly shredded cucumbers.

There are many variations of this dish as it can be made from a variety of pastes.  Beijing would use the yellow paste (黄酱)whereas in Tianjin, sweet bean paste (甜面酱) or douban paste (豆瓣酱) would be used.

Minced Pork Noodles (炸酱面) $6.80

The food is pretty mediocre and I could hardly find any signs of pork mince in the so called 'minced pork' noodle.  The paste was a bit too salty for my liking and I hate bean sprouts.
Luckily I sloshed it down with milk tea<3

Milk tea by Green Time (麦香奶茶) $3

Wise decision to buy the milk tea in the last second.

Yes, I am eating by the computer table again AND YES, I am also chatting on msn rather than doing my work.

I have decided to put my 'sugarpuffi' tag on every picture.  Not that someone is stealing my pictures (and please, that thing is easy to be cropped off or rubbed off in Photoshop), I just think it would look cool and 'professional' o.0 *loling at myself*.

Toan Thang - Pho Eatery Flemington

I am a BIG Pho fan.  I just can't get enough of it.  I'm pretty sure I can eat it 7 days a week without getting sick of it.

Our family go eat pho quite often...well only when mum's in China because the rest of the family just get lazy without her nagging around telling us to do this and that.

Everyone is at home on Sundays so that's normally when we go eat Pho together.

So far, I have only found one person that eat Pho the same way as me and I do not wish to name that particular's name ever again in the future.  If you happen to read this (which I highly doubt that you will) FUCK YOU!

We live a 5 minute drive from the Flemington Pho area.  It's a place where nearly every single restaurant is a Vietnamese Pho place.  The other Pho area would be Cabramatta but it's farrrrrrrrrrrrrr from where I live.

We come to the best Pho restaurant in the Flemington area: Toan Thang which I believe means 'Total Win' or 'Grand Winner'.  At least that's what the Chinese characters say.

Outside Toan Thang
Basil and Lemons for our Phos
Special Rare Beef Pho $7.50

I have a picky Pho eating routine where I would start off by picking out all the onions and shallots, squeeze the lemon juice on the beef and add a dash of Fish Sauce (nước mắm/鱼露) to the soup.
Condiments tray containing two types of chili sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, fish sauce, salt and pepper.
My Pho after picking out all the onions and shallots

That's right, I use chopsticks with my left hand.

Pho is possibly one of the few things that I could actually finish because they taste soooo good! Well ok there are still some noodles floating around in the soup but most of them are gone!

What I like about Toan Thang is their soup base.  It's just the way I like it.  The noodles are soft and the meat is thinly sliced and tender.

The downside to this place is that it's TOO popular!  Most often you will find people lining up outside during dinner time.  At some occassions, they even ran out of Pho soup base!  We left dissapointed of course.

I'm sure SOMEONE out there eats Pho the same way as I do. Please tell me if that person happens to be you!

Jarrah Moment Samples

So my Jarrah Moment Samples have arrived in the mail.  Honestly, I don't even recall requesting or where for that matter but who cares? It's FREE!

Enclosed are two samples of Jarrah Moment coffee satchets with flavours being Cino: Cheeky Cino and Chocolate: Milk Belgian Desire.

I tried the Chocolate one of course~and followed the instructions on making a cold serving which was dissolving the powder in 20mL of hot water and pour in cold milk.

Chocolate: Milk Belgian Desire

The spoon shouldn't be in there~I know, but I had no where to put it.

I'm actually pretty impressed.  The drink was creamy and smooth; much better than other satchet form chocolate drinks I've tried in the past.

I have yet to try the cappuccino but I imagine it wouldn't be that bad.

I'm not really a instant coffee/chocolate fan because I think there is still a difference between the real thing.  I'm just picky, I know.  But if it's 11pm on a winter night, you wouldn't want to go outside for a coffee fix would you?  That's when these little satchets of joy come in handy.  It's always nice to have them around if you are too lazy to grind and make your own coffee.

Dinner at Mamak

I thought I would have nothing interesting to blog about but oh how wrong can I be.  At exactly 18:59, I received a call from Silsil saying that they are in the line for Mamak.  By this stage, I was already starting to pack my bags and was out of the classroom by the time we finished the conversation.

I jogged from UTS to Mamak while my head is going faster.  One side of my brain is thanking the fact I was wearing converse and was able to run at a non humiliating pace but the other was stabbing myself for wearing the most daggiest clothing and now my 3 best friends are going to see it.

I am so glad that they are still in line by the time I got there~hey I only took 6minutes! Thank god my uni is close to Chinatown.  I would cry if I went to an ungodly far place like UWS (sorry to whoever goes there but your uni is FARRRR).

We are finally seated and Erin was about to collapse from a mixture of sleep and food deprivation.
Teh Ais (Ice Milk Tea) $3.50

I was about to order Teh Tarik, the classic 'stretched' tea but it was too hot to drink in this Spring day.
Mee Goreng $10.50
Wok tossed hokkien noodles with eggs, prawns, fish cake slices and fresh bean sprouts.

I warned about the chilliness of this dish but Silsil won't listen. Serves her right! She had to swap her dish with Lucy~the mighty chilli eater in our group.

So she got this, which was originally Lucy's
Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken $7.50
Fragrant coconut rice with an ensemble of sambal, peanuts, crispy anchovies, cucumber and hard boiled egg.
Erin's Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken $7.50
Erin the fried chicken Queen eating her favourite food...fried chicken!
She demonstrates the art of chicken eating: stab and eat.
My Roti Planta (Butter roti) $6

Our roti desserts...
My/Lucy's Roti Pisang + Ice cream (Banana wrapped in roti) $7.50

You can also select the sweet rotis with curry...like WTF?

As I predicted, I was about to spew up after eating my second roti.  My piggy Erin came to the rescue and finished it for me.
Silsil's Roti Kaya (Pandan and coconut wrapped in roti) $7.50

I call it diabetes on a plate.  It was sooooooo sweet and everyone had this OMG IM GONNA BE FAT look while Silsil was indulged in her plate of sugary goodness.
Erin's Roti Bom (A fatter, richer, sweeter version of our rotis) $7.50

WTF is this?  It was really dry, maybe it was from the thickness and the sticky substance (or glaze) on top was a weird caramel thingy but salty o.0.  We actually waited around 20minutes for this =.=///

When it was time to pay the bill, we realised that we are ALL broke.  It's so sad dining with bestfriends because everyone think someone will cover their bill for them and pay them back later so when reality hit us, were just staring at each other and tried to dig to the bottom of our bags for coins.

After we finally gathered up enough money, Silsil paid with her credit card anyway.  She thought it was too embarrassing to give the guy a handful of coins but if I was her, I wouldn't give a fk.  Besides, all restaurants want coins anyway.

So what was I going to show you today prior to being informed about the surprise dinner gathering?

This...
White Chocolate Mocha $4.85 with....FREE toast

Gloria Jean's Ultimo Branch is having a Summer Special where you get a free toast with every Regular or Large drink purchase.  I was about to ask for a Babycino but stopped myself as I thought I was taking too much advantage of their free offers.
Vegetarian Pad Thai $8.50

Gosh this thing used to be $7.50.  It came in the world's largest container!  Couldn't even finish half of this monstrous serving.  And yes...I'm eating at the computer table at uni tsk tsk.

Lunch at Musashi Dining Bar

FINALLY! After days of non existent sleep, I finally handed in 2 of my assignments ontime.  To celebrate, we shot right to Musashi and ordered our favourite meals.

Since I introduced my uni friends to Musashi, it has became our celebration place whenever we finish a major assignment and today is no difference.

Janny chose this weird avocado drink
Niseko of Snow $5.50
Ingredient: Fresh avocado, calpis, kiwi syrup, milk

It tasted like an avocado puree but thicker...very how can I say it...unusal XD

My Musashi Blue $4.80
Ingredient: Blue syrup, lychee syrup, grapeftuit juice, soda

They took away my favourite drink which is a pink version of this.  It has more soda and watermelon pieces.  Had to settle for second best I guess :/

The Musashi Lunch Menu has always been my favourite.  If you want dinner, try Masuya (they are the same family).

My Teriyaki Salmon & Sashimi $19.80
Tasmanian royal salmon fillet sauteed with teriyaki sauce & assorted sashimi

THEY USED TO BE $17.80!!!  Can't believe it went up by two whole dollars but the sashimi size got bigger.
Teriyaki Salmon
Assorted Sashimi
The tuna sashimi are soooo thick<3

The rice was not even touched.  Considering that I haven't ate for more than a whole day, I thought I would be super hungry but my stomach failed me once again...I only managed 1 out of the 2 salmon fillets.  What a waste Y~Y.
Vegetarian Set $16.80
Spring roll, vegetable tempura, deep fried tofu, inari-sushi & vegetable sushi roll

Janny hates seaweed! The seaweed sushi is mine :D Muwahahaha.

BE WARNED! This is a massive blog entry.  Blogger is not responsible for sudden hunger while reading this.

I have been visiting this market since Year 11 and everytime I go, I will bring home something. I'm a terrible shopaholic~I know. This is the first time that I've been taking photos of the market and it was NOT EASY with people everywhere and bumping into me every second, it was almost impossible to get a clear shot~so please don't mind the blurriness.
