Crave SIFF: Sugar Hit 2011 - Sydney Harbour Marriott and Tony Bilson's Number One Wine Bar & Bistro

It's October and you know what that means!! It's Crave Sydney International Food Festival which means I would be eating non stop for an entire month (I already do that but, now I'm doing it on an extreme level).

Did my first Sugar Hits tonight and I can't wait to blog about it already. Went to Mappen for a light dinner, a stroll in Hyde Park for Art and About then this year's Sugar Hit starts on the strike of 9.

Macquarie Lounge - Sydney Harbour Marriott

Sydney Harbour Marriott was my first stop and they have their Sugar Hit in the Macquarie Lounge. 


As usual, the Sugar Hit is $20 which includes a dessert and a Brown Brother's dessert wine. This year at Sydney Harbour Marriott, they provided a 'Triple Chocolate Tasting Plate' with a glass of 2010 Brown Brothers Moscato.

Dark Chocolate Mudcake

Three cute little cakes consisting of dark, milk and white chocolate was brought to me.  The chocolate mudcake wasn't the best cake to start off my Sugar Hit for 2011 as it was a bit of a let down.  The mudcake had a refrigerator taste which means it has been sitting in there for a while. The hardness of the cake also indicated its long lifespan. *sigh*

More like a wedge of mousse on a chocolate brownie than a 'tower' but nevertheless quite delicious.

White Chocolate Mousse with Orange Glaze

I liked this cake the most and is weird because I love dark chocolate the most and white chocolate the least yet tonight, it was the other way around.

The white chocolate mousse was light and smooth.  It was held together by a 'dark chocolate woven basket' similar to the Sugar Hit presented last year at the Shangri-La. The base was a fluffy disc of sponge which went well with the mousse.

My next Sugar Hit was at Tony Bilson's Number One Wine Bar & Bistro.  They had this dessert for Sugar Hit back in 2009 but I guess this is just too popular to let it go away.

We were seated in a cosy spot along the back side where the couches are.  Ever table has a seasonal pop plant which I think was very cute.

Unlike other Sugar Hit places, we were presented with a glass of Cooks Lot Wine instead of a Brown Brothers which puzzled me.  The wine was a luscious sticky exhibiting cumquat, toffee and marmalade aromas, followed by an opulent palate of marmalade, candied pineapple and lime.  The sweet citrus and toffee flavours complimented the dessert perfectly well and I wish I could bring the bottle home.

The dessert was definitely one of the better Sugar Hits I've tried and wins Marriott hands down. The tarte was light, sweet and refined. It has a mix of textures with the pastry base being warm, flaky and buttery filled with a thin layer of smooth frangipane then topped with crunchy pear (I swear it tasted like apples) and a scoop of cool, creamy vanilla bean icecream which added a nice contrast to the warm dessert.

I had difficulty tackling this dessert, not knowing how to cut it.  In the end, I chose to cut it up like a pizza and filled my mouth with this delicious dessert one slice at a time. The crisp crunch sound made when cutting through the pastry was immensely satisfying.

I didn't forget to take a photo of this very interesting mechanical rooster looking 'device' placed next to the cashier.

Ohoh! While I was taking a stroll in Hype Park, I spotted...well Mr. W spotted a possum so we carefully crept up to it and took some photos. Too cute!! It was the closest I've been to a possum and the fact that it wasn't scared and tried to run away really surprised me.

Hooray to the start of Sugar Hits =D Interesting how Number One Wine Bar is using an alternate dessert wine, but I probably won't get around to trying the Sugar Hit there - the dessert is on their menu normally so I'm hoping to have dinner there eventually and try it then!

Wow! I'm the biggest chocoholic but I think you've sold me on the Bilson's dessert. Even their dessert wine sounds nicer.

Yep it is sugar hit time, may actually go to one this year. I like the look of the pear and frangipane tart.

You should come to my place, I am surrounded by possums. They eat my herb garden, or what was once a herb garden and sound like elephants on my roof. Don't get me started about mating season LOLs.

Hey sugarpuffi, i've never been to a Sugar Hit event so i hope you don't mind if i ask you some questions..

the bilsons dessert looks amazing and i really love apple/pear pies/tarts so i really want to try. what is the procedure ? do i just rock up...or do i have to book etc ? Also can i just order that and nothing else...and then leave ? I'm a complete stranger to fine dining restaurants and etiquette. Hope you don't mind helping me out a bit !

@spiderman Hi spiderman! thanks for commenting. I would recommend booking because this way they can save you a spot and expecting you rather than giving them a little surprise (nor you would be disappointed when they tell you there are no tables left).

Yes, you can just order a sugar hit and leave. please bear in mind that sugar hit starts at 9pm so make sure you have somewhere to go before hand! Hope this helps!

haha...you and your sugar hit marathon again this year. i rem we were soo sick of it by the end of the night last year ;)
if theres one sugar hit i do this year, it must just be @ bilsons...the tart looks amazing with the scoop of ice-cream...!

I know this if off topic but I'm looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is required to get set up? I'm assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I'm not very internet smart so I'm not 100% certain.
